Do You Know Who To Call In A Gas Emergency?

Customers called the National Gas Emergency Service will be asked for more information by an experienced operator, who will then dispatch an engineer who should be on-site within two hours.

The call-hander will also offer tips about what to do until the engineer arrives.

These include…

Opening all windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate.

Turning off all gas cookers, fires and appliances until they have been thoroughly tested by the engineer.

Extinguish all naked flames and do not light cigarettes or matches.

Turn off the gas supply at the meter.

Do not switch lights on or off.

Ask family members or other residents to stay clear of the area.

The Northern Gas Networks engineer will not leave until he or she is satisfied that the home is safe.

The research asked 8,023 consumers throughout the UK if they know what to do after smelling gas and the responses were broken down by area.

If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, call 0800 111 999 as soon as you can – and keep the number handy so you know the number to call if you ever need to.
